Choosing Headgear that is Comfortable
Options are not limited when shopping for equipment when you are a pilot. Most pilots have a particular brand and style of headset they like and that will sit comfortably on their heads for hours on end in the cockpit. If you are just starting out and buying your first set, the variety may make for some confusion. Every headset has what is known as a “caliper pressure”, or the pressure it exerts upon one’s head when in use. In addition to this number, you might want to take the unit’s actual weight into consideration before purchase. Softcomm headsets, for instance, are particularly heavy pieces of equipment that weigh anywhere from 14 to 22 ounces. They are very sturdy, professional-looking headsets, to be sure, but the weight hand pressure might be a little much for those who are sensitive to any kind of force exerted on their head. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the Telex 850, which is absolutely tiny by comparison. It essentially looks like a set of flimsy headphones with a mic tacked onto the side. However, it is relatively sturdy even though it is tiny at only 4 ounces in weight, if you are seeking let head pressure this could be the perfect set for you.
